Youth held for entering tortoise’s enclosure, standing on its back

A youngster who allegedly stood on the back of a tortoise at the Nehru Zoological Park, had a picture clicked and posted on Facebook, was arrested by police on Wednesday night. Fazal Shaik was charged with violating provisions of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.
Zoo Curator G. Ramakrishna Rao said the accused had entered the Galapagos Tortoise enclosure and had photographs taken while standing on the back of a tortoise. Such practices are prohibited at the zoo and a case was registered as per provisions of the Act, he said.
Bahadurpura Inspector Kaushik said the accused was trapped and arrested based on a complaint by Nehru Zoo Assistant Curator Maqsood Mohiuddin. “During investigation, we came to know that Fazal had visited the zoo in May and July last year and had these pictures taken,” he said, adding that the photographs were posted on Facebook to get more likes.
