ZTE V5 review: Good design, decent price


Early this week while waiting for an audience with the UP chief secretary in Lucknow, I was tempted to eavesdrop on an engrossing conversation taking place between a group of state government officials, who were there in the waiting lounge for the same reason. The topic of discussion was on mobile devices and what amazed me was the level of knowledge that has percolated down among ordinary citizens. Talks revolved around issues such as the difference between a dual-core and an octa-core processor, how to boost the speed of a mobile phone, the benefits of having a Corning Gorilla Glass and so on and so forth. Gadget talks such as these are indeed going high-tech, aren’t they?
Also debated were the benefits of owning a value for money Chinese handset, which gives almost all the features found in a high-end mobile phone.
Fresh from this ground-level knowledge, I was excited to lay my hands on a ZTE mobile phone sent across for a product evaluation. It is the ZTE V5, a stylish device somewhat similar to a BlackBerry Z10, and is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor with quad-core CPU that promises to offer a seamless mobile experience. Like many other mobile phones, this new ZTE offering too is being made available on the e-commerce platform, snapdeal.com. It is priced at R10,999.
First, a few words on the maker of this device. ZTE Mobile Devices is a division of ZTE, a leading telecommunications equipment, networks and mobile devices company headquartered in Shenzhen, China. In recent months, India has emerged as one of the most important markets for the company and soon, it plans to launch its flagship Nubia range of products which is a success globally. ZTE has also revamped its distribution structure in India by appointing five regional distributors with geographical focus.
Back to the V5. The ZTE phone comes across as a great looking phone and has very good build quality. It comes with an elegant 5-inch multi-touch screen and a sharp HD finish. The phone has a white colour body at the back that gives a glossy finish but it does not leave fingerprints on the body. The front panel has a large display with three easily distinguishable keys at the bottom.
