When Flipkart and Xiaomi go for an open sale of Redme 1S, breaking from the past, the rush to buy these phones crashed the billion-dollar website bringing to one of the modern tech challenges to the fore on Monday.
Flipkart has announced its “Big Billion Day Sale” on Monday aimed at selling at least one billion products online with 30 to 50% discounts on smartphones, electronic parts and variety of other products at one go. Xiaomi Redmi 1s was available for open sale for all without any pre-registrtion and for those who have registered for the phone were added with the phone in their cart.
As of 1:30 pm, the device was available on Flipkart for a quickbuy but soon it crashed under pressure from e-consumers in India, reflecting the huge population of the country.
Despite Flipkart’s preparations to withstand the rush by deploying 10,000 staff proved futile on the ‘The Big Billion Day’ as the company began offloading its stock of multiple items at price of Re 1, up to 30% off on smartphones, laptops starting Rs 15,000, fashion and perfumes at 50% off and toys at 50% off, among others.
Those frustrated to buy online quickly turned to Twitter to air their anger and accusing Flipkart for not making enough arrangements for an event like Billion Day sale. While many consumers were not getting order confirmation after making payments, others said they were not able to see items though they added them to their shopping cart.
Some of the discounts include Nokia Lumia 1020 priced Rs 19,999; Rs 8,000 buyback discount on Motorola Moto X (Gen 2); Rs 3,500 off on Asus Fonepad 7; JBL Pulse Bluetooth speaker at Rs 7,999; Sony Bravia 32-inch LED TV at Rs 37,400; Spice Dream Uno Android One phone at Rs 5,499 and Nexus 7 (2013) Wi-Fi at Rs 16,999.
Not far behind, Flipart’s competitors, Amazon and Snapdeal are also up for the challenge. Snapdeal in its big page advertisements in newspapers said, “For others it’s a big day. For us, today is no different.”
