DMK District Secretaries Meet Decides to Hold State-wide Demonstrations

CHENNAI:  The DMK has announced that it would hold demonstrations and fasts across the State to raise local issues. The party, however, may not be able to continue to keep the distance it has maintained so far from the issue surrounding AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa’s conviction, with party sources saying it is inevitable that the matter will come up at the demonstrations.
The decision to hold the protests was made at a meeting of district secretaries and senior office bearers held at the party headquarters in Chennai on Wednesday, and was released in the form of a resolution. Another resolution called for the Centre’s intervention in the maintenance of law and order in the State.
The party formally announced that the agenda for the protests could be decided locally by the respective district secretaries on the basis of problems and issues faced in their respective regions. “It is unlikely that the focus of the protests will remain within this definition. Given the current scenario, it is inevitable that the topic will shift to the case,” conceded a senior party leader.
